A Race To The Bottom: Intel DG45FC

by Chris Morley on Jul.05, 2008, under News

A little birdy brought this to me last week.

For full specs, read here.  I also received a mATX version of this mini-ITX powerhouse, the DG45ID.

This fulfills all the players I mentioned in my article I wrote for DailyTech last year entitled “Video Processing: A Race To The Bottom.

That was nearly a year ago, and our options today are fantastic.  AMD’s 780G led the charge, followed closely by NVIDIA’s 8200 chipset, and now Intel’s G45 solutions are starting to enter the fray.  It’s a good time to be an HTPC enthusiast, that’s for sure.

Just to be sure, I did test the DG45FC @ 1080p over HDMI running H.264 content ~30Mbps with 2GB of RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 and experienced about 28% CPU utilization.  Not bad in my book!  That was with Vista 32-bit and ArcSoft’s TotalMedia Theatre.

Thanks 'Stone' but I've already seen this. I was more looking for an exact date, but I guess there isn't any :-(

So...I guess I'll just have to wait patiently till it's out...hopefully before I come back (August 14)

WOW!!! The DG45ID it DEFINITELY the mobo I'd like to put in my TF8.

Like I've mentioned before I'll be in Detroit, MI for a business trip between 4-14 of August.

Since I actually live in Israel, I'm planning to buy the mobo for my HTPC system there, as it is much cheaper than in Israel.

Since the DG45ID nor DG45FC are currently available, I'm leanning toward the 780G mobo.

Any chance the DG45ID will become available till then???

    Any official release date???

"Yes, it’ll fit in the TF8 and was just MADE for the TF5."

I've been lurking patiently, but since you brought up the TF5 yourself...

    Any news?

Is this available in retail? I been waiting for G45 for a loong time! Intel has done an excellent job supporting this chipset including MPEG2 decoding in hardware (xvmc)

Wasn't me in 2003. I've never been there. Looking foward to your testing.
  • Scott - I believe it does uncompressed LPCM 8 channel but am waiting on a new receiver to test. Did we meet at E3 in 2003?

Thanks for the tip on the DG45ID board. I find it all too easy to get confused on the different sizes. The larger board has more connectivity but I look forward to your TF HDD testing.

it would look even better in a TT remember that one

Will the DG45ID send dolby true HD over the HDMI connection?
  • Yes, it'll fit in the TF8 and was just MADE for the TF5. I have a TF HDD here and I'll see how it works...if you're looking at the TF8 as your solution I would definitely look at the DG45ID board that is full mATX and will also fit in the TF8.

    Chris

Does this fit into the Omaura TF8?

It certainly has some nice specs. I'm a bit concerned about the single expansion slot although, to be honest, I'm struggling to think what I'd put in there!

I wonder if the eSATA port works with the Omaura external storage unit?

I've definitely been waiting for the G45 chipset to appear and this board shows what can be packed into the mobo now. Hopefully other board manufacturers will provide a bit more flexibility.
