One of these PCs claims to not be like the others…

by Chris Morley on Dec.04, 2008, under Industry Analysis

One of these systems from an acclaimed boutique builder claims to be “expertly engineered” and features “meticulous hand assembly” with every cable “thoughtfully secured out of the way” – can you tell the difference from the cheaper Tier 1s?  Boutiques should stick to what they know best – high dollar niche gaming PCs that truly deliver on their promises.

  • Hahah, we have a winner...
  • Even without the cabling...#3 is obviously the not-first-tier product. It doesn't have a modem ;)

    I'm confused. Is this a trick question? I don't see a difference.
  • None are particularly well done IMO. From the URLs of the images:

    #1 eMachines
    #2 Gateway
    #3 Velocity Micro

I am therefore going to say #3 is "supposed" to be the boutique builder, but the Gateway cables look better.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. But hey, who DOESN'T want IDE cables on their brand new machine? And single channel memory? Awesome. I can't wait to see more of their "Nostalgia" line-up.
  • The kicker here is these pictures were taken off of Newegg - and Newegg got them by opening up production boxes. There was no chance to submit "trailer queens" specifically built for a one time engagement. Customers can't buy those systems. They're reserved only for reviewers.

"Meticulously hand assembled" isn't as important as the skill level of the assembler. That should be part of their marketing pitch. If it's just a warm body they dragged in off the street, that's not going to do much for my pc, no matter how conceptually engineered it is.

Hopefully, it isn't number 2, because that would be a joke (even though i have a feeling it is 2). I would say #3.
